A5 Gamers' Notebooks

The A5 Gamers' Notebook Kickstarter has got just under a week left to run. It's already funded and I'm now also doing some work on designs for the follow-up campaigns.

I'm planning two additional notebook designs. I'll run short Kickstarters for each of them in quick succession. The first one is a hex notebook with large 17mm hexes on one page and a smaller 7mm hexes on the other.

The large hexes are arranged as 8 columns by 10 rows making them ideal for charting Traveller subsectors. At this stage I'm not sure whether to add numbers to these hexes and would welcome feed back on this.

The smaller hexes are arranged with a larger 15 hex super hex outline and a marked centre hex. This is the same format that I use on my existing A5 hex pads.

The other version of the notebook that I'm planning has the same 7mm hex design as above but the left page will have a grid along with a lined section.

Both of these notebooks will have 50 sheets and will be printed on 120gsm paper. In the images the heavy black lines near the margin won't be printed and are just a guide to dhow where the wiro binding holes will extend to.

A5 Gamers' Notebooks Kicstarter is Live

I've just launched a Kickstarter to fund a reprint of our popular A5-sized Gamers' Notebooks. The design is almost the same as the previous version. I've increased the paper thickness and reduced the number of sheets to keep the overall weight of the book the same as last time (an important factor when posting them out). The only other small change is that logo on the back cover will be moved to the inside back cover and reduced in size.

It's a short campaign ending on Monday 22nd April. As soon as I've posted the rewards for it I hope to launch a new campaign for a version with hexes.

Garadur's Plateau Megadungeon Poster Map

I've just received a very limited print run of this giant megadungeon map by Charley Phipps. The prints are B1 sized (1000 x 707mm 39.4 x 27.8 inches) and printed on matt white paper. I've added some of them to my site (see link below) and I'll be taking the rest with me to Dragonmeet in December.

Caves of Chaos Poster Prints On Sale Now

I've now added the Caves of Chaos poster-sized maps by Dyson Logos to the Squarehex site. There are two versions of the map, one with numbers, and one without. There is also a set of mapping sheets that simply have a grid and the cave entrances marked on them. Finally, there is special-priced set that includes both posters and a set of mapping sheets. All the sheets measure 707mm wide by 500mm high and are printed on matt white 115gsm paper. If you need a frame I got mine from Ikea for £5 or £6 in the UK and Amazon have a wide range in the £15-20 price range. All the frames I found were 700mm wide so to make the print fit nicely you need to trim 3-4mm off each side.

Dyson Logos has kindly given me permission to print some poster-sized versions of his superb Caves of Chaos maps. The image below shows the version with no numbers, but there will also be a numbered version and a blank mapping sheet with 10mm grid lines and just the cave entrances.

The maps are printed on 115gsm matt white paper and they measure 707mm wide by 500mm high.

I hope to release them for sale later this week, but I was so pleased with how the fist one turned out I just had to share it.

2.5D Dungeon Terrain Launch

I've just released a new pack of professionally terrain sheets for creating 2.5D dungeons. The sheets in the pack were created by Kristian Richards of Crooked Staff Publishing. The first pack in the range contains 24 A4-sized sheets of terrain printed on 170gsm silk art paper. There are 12 sheets of flooring texture and 12 sheets for creating wall, doors, columns, alters, tables and other stone/wooden items.

All you need to add to the kit to make your dungeon is some thick card or foam board, a sharp knife (please take care when making cuts) and metal ruler, and a glue stick. As a launch offer you can buy a special triple pack of the terrain and receive a free aluminium ruler and a large glue stick.

Dungeon Mug on Sale Now!

I've just received a batch of my new Dungeon Mugs. I intend to take these to sell at conventions, but when they arrived I was so pleased with them that I decided to put them up online too. Shrine Geomorph Contest Entry

I'm really enjoying the bi-weekly Geomorph contest run by Inkwell Ideas. I'm using the contest as catalyst for not only spending more time drawing maps, but also to try out new ways of creating them. For my shrine entry, I created the whole map using Scribus (free DTP software). There's not a single bit of drawing on it. Everything is just lines and shapes added one-by-one.

The map is called The Shrine of Collected Confessions. Worshipers place a coin in one of the fonts situated at the corner, and the door opposite opens as if by magic, to grant them access to one of the shrines four private chambers. They can then say their prayers, and confess their sins. Of course they are blissfully unaware that anything juicy that they reveal is recorded by the scribes in the secret chamber at the centre of the shrine.

Battlepad Map - Mountain Mine

This Battlepad map features a mountain path that leads to a small mine. while drawing it I imagined it to be run by a tough, mean gang of seven dwarves.

Battlepad Map - Dungeon Toll Point

This Battlepad map features a small section of an underground road. The road is blocked in the centre of the map by a cave-in. The only way to get through is by paying a toll to the Hobgoblin unit that have control of the passageway though. The Hobgoblins are highly organised and keep a series of strong steel gates in the area locked until they receive payment.

Dwarven Trading Hall

This map is a plan for a Dwarven Trading Hall or Rest Stop. I imagine it to be set in the mountains, midway between Dwarven Holds. It would be a place for the little fellas to break their journeys, and/or trade with one another. I'm not sure strangers would be welcome.

It is drawn on an A5 sheet of paper with a 7mm grid. Pads of the very same paper, along with larger A4 ones are available via my Kictstarter project.

Borderlands Village Map

This map is a based on an illustration from a children's history book.  It's a map of an 11th century Scottish village, but I think it also has the right feel for a fantasy village on the edge of civilization. Marg drew this one for me (in case you were wondering why it looks better than my other maps).

It is drawn on an A5 sheet of paper with a 7mm grid. Pads of the very same paper, along with larger A4 ones are available via my Kictstarter project.

Mini-Megadungeon Map

Here is another new map that I've drawn to support my Dungeon Mapping Pads Kickstarter. This one is drawn on a sheet of A5 paper with a 3.5mm grid. It's part of a Megadungeon level designed to illustrate the usefulness of have paper with differing grid sizes.  I've also drawn the map split into quadrants, on 4 A5 sheets with a 7mm grid.

All the maps are completely hand-drawn with a pencil and a couple of black fineliners. The second image shows a scan of the first image. I corrected a couple of small mistakes, applied the cartoon filter in GIMP and used a grey fill for solid areas.

The Kickstarter project has now passed its first stretch goal. This means all the sheets in the pads will be double-sided, with a 7mm grid on the front and a 3.5mm grid on the back. Here's a link to the project page:

Mountain Temple

Here is another new map that I've drawn to support my Dungeon Mapping Pads Kickstarter. This one is drawn on a sheet of A5 paper with a 7mm grid. It's a map of a Mountain Temple cut into the mountain. A centuries old forgotten place recently rediscovered by cultists. It would be very easy to extend it to serve as an entry point to a large dungeon with the addition of some stairs or maybe a doorway that has been bricked over.

The map was completely hand-drawn with a couple of black fineliners. I then scanned it, applied the cartoon filter in GIMP, used a grey fill for solid areas, and added a title.

The Dead Road

Here is another new map that I've drawn to support my Dungeon Mapping Pads Kickstarter. This one is drawn on a sheet of A5 paper with a 7mm grid. It's a map of The Dead Road which I see as a location inside a necropolis. It'd be a place where very important and/or dangerous people are laid to rest. The road gets extended, and new crypts get added as required. This may appear in an adventure at a later date, but for now it's just a map.

A5 Dungeon Map on 7mm Grid Paper

To promote my Dungeon Mapping Pads Kickstarter I'm going to post a new map every couple of days to show what is possible with the different size/scale pads I will be printing.

I drew a quick pencil version of this map this afternoon while my daughter was playing in the park. I then redrew it this evening in ink and scanned it.  The only computer work done was to add the grey fill areas.

The pad used for these maps is from an A5 pad (I cut down one of my A3 pads to make a sample A4 and A5 pad)with a 7mm grid. It's a really nice size to work with.
